Open Files Instructions


1) Backup Warning on Home Screen

  1. Are you getting a message in red text on your home page ("x files were not backed up" or "y days since last successful backup" or "No fully successful backups" or "File in use by another application")? Don't worry, your backups are running ok, you are just attempting to back up an open file.
  2. Click the Log Tab.

2) Log tab

  1. The log files display information about which files were backed up at what times.
  2. Double-click the last entry to to see the log details for the most recent backup.

3) Log Details

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the log detail. The last few lines that start with "can't back up file" provide the location of the open file(s). Note the file extension to determine if you need this file backed up.
  2. You can visit "Files to Backup" and enter the file extension (i.e. ".doc")  into the "What kind of file is this" form, and click the Find Out button for details.
  3. Once you verify that you don't need the file, you can press CTRL+C to copy the file name into the find file dialog (see next screen) or line into a text file.
  4. Click the Backup View tab.

  1. Click CTRL+F to bring up the Find File Dialog (or click the magnifying glass icon in the upper right)
  2. Click CTRL+P to paste the name of the open file you copied, then click the highlighted line.

5) Backup Rule Wizard

  1. Click Ok
  2. The green checkmark will turn into a red X, meaning the file is deselected from backup. Do this with each open file you encountered in the backup log detail screen.
