How can I run automated backups using AOL as my ISP?PC Data Backups users may select AOL as their ISP and perform their backups through AOL. However, there are some compatibility issues AOL users should be aware of. AOL Versions PC Data Backups is compatible with AOL versions 3.0 and higher. Users must use the Win95-98 (32-bit) version of AOL. You can tell which version of AOL you have from the first screen that appears when AOL loads. Connection Issues PC Data Backups cannot automatically connect (dial) to AOL, because AOL uses a proprietary connection protocol, not the standard TCP/IP with Windows Dial-Up Networking. Therefore, a user must manually connect to AOL before initiating a backup or restore operation. Automated backups and reconnecting automatically when the AOL connection is dropped are not supported due to incompatibility of AOL software with normal Windows dialing protocols. In order to use AOL with PC Data Backups, the user must select "Use direct connection" as their connection option during registration (or after registration under Options, Connection). The user must then manually connect to AOL before opening PC Data Backups, each time he or she wants to do a backup or retrieve. Due to AOL network traffic issues, a backup or restore through AOL may take significantly longer than through another ISP. As mentioned above, if the AOL connection is lost partway through a backup, PC Data Backups cannot restart it. The AOL connection must also be closed manually when the backup or retrieve is completed. |
