Which files can be safely deselected from the Backup View?

For noncritical data files, if you wish to avoid seeing error messages about open files, deselect them from the Backup View by finding each file (press Ctrl-F and type the file name), clicking the green check mark next to the file, selecting Don't Back up "Just this file", and clicking OK to change it to a red X. We recommend deselecting non-critical open files so that you will be aware of any new error messages.
  • Some files always stay open, e.g. Dell Management Console or a wireless keyboard or mouse.
  • Temporary or cache files created by Norton Antivirus 2004 or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache\*.bin) are not needed.
  • Some of the open files may be in use by spyware programs. Consider using adware and spyware removal programs like AdAware and SpyBot.
